Custom design motorcycles, red leather jackets, malignant telekinetic fast growing tumors and Neo-Manhatten. News reports are showing that the live action Akira movie, based out of a futuristic New York City (instead of Tokyo) is shaping up well for it’s possible early 2013 release.

According to Deadline, the script, which is based from 2 out of the three Otomo novels, is currently being shopped around to Andrew Garfield (The Social Network and next year’s The Amazing Spider-Man), Robert Pattinson (Twilight), and James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class), for the role of Tetsuo. And Tron Legacy’s Garret Hedlund, McAvoy’s X-Men co-star Michael Fassbender, Star Trek’s Chris Pine, and Joaquin Phoenix for the role of Kaneda.

Still on board is director Albert Hughes (from hell, the book of Eli).  The film is not an adaptation of the popular Anime film, but instead based on the 6 volume graphic novel written by Katishuro Otomo.
